Penn Station is bizarrely not crowded and I keep checking the date to make sure it's Friday and I'm supposed to be here today

The secret at Penn Station Amtrak is to go to the arrivals screen and find the arrival from whatever line you are riding (i.e. if you are heading to DC look for the train arriving from Boston) - 95% of the time it will lead you to the right track 10 mins before everyone else.

This is the end point for my line, alas. 9 times out of 10 it's at the same track but then there's that one time it's at the complete other end of the station.

But at least it's also in a hideous low-ceilinged building after a beautiful one was destroyed

“When the train does arrive, everyone will line up to get on a single, narrow escalator. The line will extend haphazardly into the atrium, blocking the paths of hundreds of other passengers. It is a flawless system.”

Having done a round-the-USA train trip, I can state with confidence that this problem isn't so much an Amtrak problem as it is a problem that's about 95% unique to Penn Station.

It's the same process at nearly every station on the northeast coast.
