That doesn't usually do much if none of these people are trending today. Maybe they will if someone in it does something to be in the news.
Cracked seems to do it for all their articles, I guess to get people to click on articles they previously weren't interested in.
It's fairly common practice for sites that rely on evergreen content. They have a deep library.
