My problem was with why they thought that was a useful visualization at all.
Graphics designers got to graphics design :) I would guess someone thought was useful to easily see states where shorter words have issues
A skilled graphic designer would know how to present information in a way that informs. I don't imagine one was anywhere near this.
Like, you might assume that longer words are more likely to be misspelled. So when you have some states asking about "sense" or "quote"
