One thing I will never understand about the coal mining stories: generation upon generation worked in them so their kids could get out.
Family lore always had my grandfather working one single day in a coal mine with his dad, and then walking out to join the marines instead.

yup. my uncle ran away to join the merchant marine at 15 to escape the mines. then sponsored my father to emigrate so he too could get out
