Pedagogical question. In most liberal arts programs, do they have kids read influential thinkers (eg Marx, Freud) before their disciples?

I worked in bookstores at two liberal arts college in 2000ish. You're getting a loooot of pop-sociology books early on (1/2)

Neil Postman and Robert Putnam were both HUGE at both schools for basic intro classes across disciplines: psych and phil.

(I personally got Freud and Marx in a Comp Lit class, and that wasn't until second semester sophomore year)
