I just hit the paywall on a Chicago Tribune article that was actually just a syndicated Daily News article. Which ... Paywalls are good. People should pay for news. But something seems weirdly broken there.

Does the NYT paywall exclude Reuters and AP stories? Small(er) papers are at a disadvantage if you just want them to count original copy rather than sister papers’ publications. In fact, better for subscribers if they can have 1 sub and get access to multiple papers, no?
all things considered I'd rather give the pageview to the paper that wrote the piece, but it feels like as an industry we're several steps away from figuring out syndication.

That would make sense to me if the paper had the staff to make enough content to make the subscription worth it (to cover local news, not something niche or highbrow.) But hardly any papers do anymore!
