Vice CEO Nancy Dubuc on layoffs: 55 in US + ~100 globally: "The reality is that some tough decisions had to be made primarily around our digital teams. Currently, our digital organization accounts for around 50% of our headcount costs, but only brings in about 21% of our revenue"pic.twitter.com/z2L32LpLHE

In the second half of the email, Vice CEO Nancy Dubuc seems to blame the company's financial situation on "Big Tech." "Platforms are not just taking a larger slice of the pie, but almost the whole pie." Wonder if she read Stratchery's post yesterday:https://stratechery.com/2020/media-regulators-and-big-tech-indulgences-and-injunctions-better-approaches/ …

Wow! “335 media jobs eliminated. 120 jobs tbd ...” Not that I want anyone to lose their job, but, Wow! 335 out of a job, possibly 120 more... NOW this economic crisis is real! Never mind the 33+ million of us, yes, MILLION, that have been out of a job for 2+ months.

the count as of a few weeks ago was about 36,000 news jobs in the U.S. alone. Here's a story with more detail on the many communities that are left without news operations at a time when people are relying on them for life-saving information.https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/10/business/media/news-media-coronavirus-jobs.html …

RESTAURANT APOCALYPSE: 8 MILLION restaurant workers are now unemployed, as the industry braces for $240 BILLION in losses. (Numbers from April - I’m sure the outlook is now more grim) Perhaps, media outlets should cover ALL sides of this crisis? Don’t get me started on Retail..

Here's the new york times business section. You'll find reporting there on the restaurant industry (the companies, and the workers), as well as the same for retail, and all sort of other pieces on the economic impact. It's awful, I absolutely agree.https://www.nytimes.com/section/business …
