Anyway, this was a beloved film from my childhood, and rewatching it was a pleasant way to pass some hours as everything else grows more tense and anxious. The same is probably true of most of the films in this thread, regardless of whether Canby liked them or not at the time.

That critic was Vincent Canby, and for some of us of a certain age, he was authoritative, influential yet without pretense. (He would be the first to suggest he didn't have a monopoly on opinions.) He was one of those who got me interested in reviewing films in the first place.
