the Guardian also does this. I think it is a piece of functionality aimed at people who think crosswords are a fun participative game rather than an heroic quest to be vanquished without rest, ideally in silent agony. I leave you to work out with which group I identify
I am ruthless against my own time records on weekdays, but on weekends my need to be a completionist takes over and I will take what help I can get.
