I'm not a fan of mayo myself. But on the other hand, Rose Levy Beranbaum did put a very similar cake recipe into the Cake Bible, and she's the grande dame of baking in my book.

It's not the only cake recipe I've heard of that uses weird ingredients and somehow works - I once saw a cake recipe that includes vinegar.
