I’d read for years that typesetters were paid by the “string” in the piece rate days (where they were typically paid in the US by the 1,000 ems set). But it took me until recently to find a contemporary account that explained what the string was!

Typesetters had their work printed as a proof on a small press, proofread, and had to correct on their own time. So they pasted together these proofs, which were called the “string.” They might have been measured by a knotted string or by a ruler (or pica pole).
