*String nerd out commences* The word “clue” comes from the word “clew,” which is a ball of yarn or string. It became associated with puzzles in the Greek myth about Theseus and the Minotaur. Theseus’ gf gave him a ball of string to help him find his way out of the maze.

I've heard "gathering string." I've never heard "gathering wool." I've never said either.
