why, dear god, why, are these "records" not normalized for inflation and/or average ticket price? We all know a poorly-performing remake of Howard the Duck will pull in $2 billion on opening night in 60 years.
But then you also have to normalize for distribution models -- a smash in 1939 is a far different thing than a smash in 2019, and ticket prices are only one part.

of course. 'Gone With the Wind' had no competition from any form of television, etc. But reporting dollar values without even taking the minimal step of adjusting for inflation is just so nutty! Reminds me of my Dad comparing his 1951 salary to my 1st minimum-wage gig.
