Not that short a period! (Maybe 8-ish years? Longer for widespread adoption? But also looming over me because those were my college/early adult years.)

as a full adult in the late '90s, I can tell you it went from internet is new in '94 to cellphones are newly common circa '99 then ubiquitous circa 2001. Then, yeah, 6 years til iPhone comes out, and then another two til smartphone ubiquity

That sounds about right. I remember in 2006 getting email access on my flip phone, and thinking ugh, who would ever want this.
