Lots of things about news consumption and production make me angry from time to time, but the "I'm going to wave my hand and casually dismiss 'the internet'" move is a pretty big catch-all guaranteed to do it every time.

In fact MOST news sites and the people who work at them learned long ago that twitter outrage is a pretty crappy measure of traffic, and chasing it on its own merits is a dumb and exhausting waste of time that doesn't even translate to pageviews or engagement or anything else.

Key word being "legit" news sites. As someone who has google alerts for key people I cover, I assure you there's a lot of garbage still going up and then being shared across social media

The only time I encounter this phenomena are comic book movie or pop culture sites. (Is Thanos a psychopath or sociopath? Breaking down every second of US.) I'm OK with that.
