A decade ago I was watching a restored print of Citizen Kane at AFI Silver, and the 80-something woman behind me -- old enough to have seen the original theatrical release -- was genuinely shocked to learn that Rosebud was the sled. I think about her a lot, actually.

I didn’t know it either. Of course, years ago I had the twist in “Psycho” spoiled for me by a “Happy Days” rerun. We all have our blind spots.
