Agreed. It was revelatory to me when i worked at the guardian a while back, this just common acceptance that this is how you do this. They were dumbfounded that the Americans did things differently.

I don’t understand why it’s not when some of the leading research on the impact of reporting on suicide has come out of the US.

i think it's because US media is traditionally so uncomfortable being in the role of an advocate for anything, even if that thing is mental health.

In Canada, it's standard not to report on the method of suicide unless there are special circumstances, as it's believed to encourage copycat deaths.

The correct term is a suicide cluster. It's not the emulation of a suicide but the sense of "permissiveness" when suicide is reported in the media.
