this is maybe not what you're looking for but 1) be extra friendly to the archivist and don't be afraid to ask for help - even small things like navigation 2) take more breaks than usual - research away is harder than research at home, give yrself some space to think. good luck!

Thanks so much! I'm mostly worried about my (bad) Italian. I don't want to seem rude, especially because I'm not a native speaker.

Wishing you good luck! I've never done research an an Italian library so I'll leave the advice-giving to people who have. Any thoughts

I'd suggest keeping a passport and letters of recommendation on hand for the reader registration process. And with smaller libraries, paging times could be longer... (most of my work was in Northern Italy / Veneto)

Double check if any of the days you'll be there are holy days of obligation- some libraries (and public transport) might have different operating hours. Also, libraries might not have wifi, so plan around that. Which libraries in particular?
-
I'd also suggest taking a couple of photocopies of your passport/ID with you, and a letter of presentation from your university, on headed stationary if possible- they're sometimes needed to register

Presentation letters for each of the archives/ libraries you plan on visiting on letterhead from your home institution. Very much a form letter where your department requests that they grant you access to facilitate your research.

Definitely a letter from your Dean. Also if there’s a faculty you know Whois familiar with or has privileges at the library you can get a letter from them. Sometimes you won’t need such validation but special collections or rare books are different.

Never researched in a country where I don’t speak the dominant language, but it’s always a good idea to ask about appointment procedures, and to carry letters of intro on letterhead, plus proof of residence (recent bank statements, etc). Maybe
