Machine Assisted Thought
The past year has seen an explosion of usable, powerful, general purpose AI tools. In these sessions we will consider:
Conversation
1. The history of machine assisted thought. Going back to Babbage’s analytical engine, computers have always been designed to mimic human cognitive processes. From Turing machines to neural networks, we’ll explore the design and capabilities of mechanically simulated cognition.

2. Putting LLMs to work. We’ll workshop putting GPT to use for a variety of tasks, from clerical to creative, and practice techniques for personalizing it to your needs and even your values and voice.

3. Progress or regress? Utopia or extinction? We’ll map out the controversies over the human impact of AI. Is it as a stepwise improvement in existing digital technology? What might it disrupt or change? Is it a messianic or eschatological phenomenon, bringing salvation or doom?
