Every multi-lane urban road is a policy failure. Basic demand management could have saved billions of dollars, tons of carbon, and millions of vehicle miles traveled.
Ha, should have said "worked around legislatures for decades." I was working for a US Representative when Newt Gingrich had Speaker Tip O'Neill's words "taken down." This was a technical foul. Ref blows whistle, minor penalty, contest continues. Not kicked out the league
It’s always the same. The right claims “cancel culture” or “political correctness” or “wokeness” is the problem. Then it bans books, exiles legislators, suppresses voting, denies women their autonomy.
I’ve worked around legislatures for years and this is beyond any type of response I’ve seen for “breach of decorum.” It’s an attack against her, against her constituents, against democracy.
BREAKING: The Montana House, on a 68-32 vote, bans the state's first trans woman lawmaker, Rep. Zooey Zephyr, from the floor, anteroom, & gallery for the rest of this session, following several days of silencing her, after she raised her mic for supporters in the gallery Monday.
Montana Republicans are silencing Zooey Zephyr for the rest of the session after she spoke out against anti-trans bills in her state. She won’t be able to speak (at all!) or vote in-person.
There’s no justification for it.
In Council districts where the majority of residents are Black, there are 68% fewer streets with a protected bike lane + a 39% higher rate of traffic injuries.

What should we do re: EV bloat? Tax car weight.
Make anyone buying a huge SUV/truck pay extra (electric or not). The District of Columbia now does this with its registration fees, and a new California bill takes a similar approach.
Don’t ask. Regulate.
“After 10 long meetings, the taskforce held its final meeting in March. There the group put most of the big ideas about the future of Lake Washington Boulevard to a vote, with a 50/50 split among those present on nearly all options.” twitter.com/UrbanistOrg/st…
A decade from now there's gonna be articles in Forbes about how the hottest jobs on the market are for people who can reliably distinguish facts and bullshit
Thinking I might mess around and get bullish on humanities degrees because techbro AI is about to take our collective cache of human knowledge and fill it with about ~25% total bullshit that someone is eventually going to have to sort through and remove.
Very revealing about the Monitor's overbearing tendencies. BTW, our check of references before monitor appointment revealed this issue, which we shared with Council and the City Attorney. They made clear they would vote for Bobb as the city's choice
Can you imagine the poor budget staffer following state law getting that threat from the Monitor? "Nice place you got here, wouldn't want any harm to it." City attorney was apoplectic on how monitor was treated, wouldn't back staff! Changed reimbursement to per diem, not actual.
Monitor threatening the city when told that state law prevented the city from reimbursing alcohol and other expenses “I’m not certain that we can currently say we are getting cooperation from the city regarding the of the consent decree."
Example - CPC developed new reform structure as called for in the negotiated agreement. In surprise move, monitor and judge blocked it, falsely claiming authority under the consent decree where none existed. City Attorney did not defend CPC.
Reformers want DOJ to leave. How did we get here?
1. Council and Pete Holmes insisted on a monitor who marginalized community
2. Ed Murray pushed out SPD reformers at request of SPOG
3. US attorney Durkan, Monitor, Judge, City Attorney and mayors minimized community voices.
What a legacy: Federal oversight of the Seattle Police Department failed to stop the cops from disproportionately targeting BIPOC communities, all while securing more money for police and less money for all other programs. | via @AshleyNerbovighttps://thestranger.com/news/2023/04/13/78946677/abolitionists-and-reformers-agree-on-something…
: If you want an easy win on safer streets, start the work on ISA in fleet vehicles.
This is an investment AND a way to prove that safety matters.
#SaferFleetsChallenge
The #SaferFleetChallenge is a way to save lives while recognizing that motorists, who are human, are going to make mistakes.
We can't simply implore drivers to do better. We need to use technology to make our roads safer. Europe is already doing it!

Per the advice of several friends who've had Covid, I've decided to reschedule the first installment of HIKE EVERY CITY for May instead of late April, in order to have a month to build back up to doing longer hikes again.
Pittsburgh will have to wait, but Philly, see you soon.
State and local advocacy organizations should add the Safer Fleets Challenge to their list of requests to elected leaders. Every place that says they support Vision Zero can lead by example, and take this low cost action to reduce speeds and save lives.
BTW, the fuel savings pay for the cost of the retrofits. So it's a budget action, as well as a climate action. Every mayor, county exec, and governor should be doing this. Unless they think speed limits they set don't apply to their own vehicles? (excepting emergency vehicles)
GPS enables the tech to slow the car. For example, at a school zone - the vehicle slows down automatically. The US should require it. But local governments don't have to wait for the feds to act.
It is called Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA). It is required on all new cars in Europe. Retrofit kits are available in the US, which are used by many commercial fleets. NYC launched a pilot for use on city vehicles.
said, we need to start sacrificing some of the convenience of driving, to make more room for safety. We need to prioritize #SafetyOverSpeed, safety of all road users.
Describes the homeless sweep tragedy. Cities sweep downtowns and parks, so homeless go to state rights of way. State sweeps its rights of way, pushing them back to downtowns and parks. We need to house people and provide services. Humanizes the homeless in his remarks
