Millions of Americans who live, work, and vote in the most populous cities in Texas are being deliberately targeted by politicians who don't represent them. The majority party in the #txlege is willing to crack the foundations of basic democratic norms. We won't stop fighting.

TX Senate gives final approval to HB 2127, bill that would block an array of city & county regulations, on an 18-13 vote. House will now decide whether to accept the Senate's changes, either sending the bill to @GovAbbott's desk or a conference committee. houstonchronicle.com/politics/texas

Texas Republicans are close to finalizing a bill that'd bar cities and counties from issuing many ordinances - effectively ending local control of everything from labor and nondiscrimination policy to water use and predatory lending. #txlege

This bill, if passed, will essentially give Republicans control of what Democrat-controlled cities can and can’t sign into local law. Worker’s protections, tenant’s rights: wiped off the books

NOW: Death Star Bill being debated on Senate floor. On it, Sen. @sarah_eckhardt says, "My concern is that I'm going to become a local official again..." Asks if #texlege is prepared to write local city and county ordinances.

A few weeks before our investigation into HomeVestors of America came out, the “We Buy Ugly Houses” company’s leadership called an online meeting for its 1,100+ franchisees. The purpose of that meeting: Teach franchisees how to push back on our story. 🧵👇👇

I'm calling for a total and complete shutdown of the Texas Legislature until we can figure out what's going on here

🚨The aging equipment Houston uses to measure residents' water usage keeps failing and not being replaced. Thus: =Too few staff to manually check water meters =A spike in estimated bills (they just guess!) =A surge in complaints +⚠️inaccurate charges⚠️

Worker protections are not an abstract issue. They are the difference between life and death for the working people who have loved ones waiting for them at home like all of us. Antelmo Ramirez should still be here.

Unless Senate Democrats get it together, these two years will be a generational missed opportunity. A Senate majority, a blizzard of stories about Supreme Court corruption, real momentum for reform, and Dems are just sending polite letters that the Court stuffs in the trash.

Justice Thomas changed his mind on an issue that’s very important to Harlan Crow and Leonard Leo—one that’s before the Court right now. levernews.com/clarence-thoma

The "death star" state interference bill House Bill 2127 could make it to a final vote in the Texas Senate as soon as TOMORROW. ACT NOW! Call your Senator and tell them to stop this destructive attack on our communities and VOTE NO on HB 2127!

Remember the prevailing legal interpretation of 2A was invented out of whole cloth by a small clique of radical gun activists less than a generation ago and was only enshrined into law in 2008. This is not a way we have to live, nor is it the way we have traditionally lived.

Twice in Texas this week mothers died covering their one surviving child from the man with a rifle who just murdered her other child in front of her.

58% of adults oppose hormone treatments for 15- to 17-year-olds. Headline: "Most Americans support anti-trans policies favored by GOP" 58% support a clean debt-ceiling bill with zero spending cuts. Headline: "Americans split on who they’d blame if U.S. defaults" Same number!

Tomorrow, 57 flights will serve Dallas and Houston, metros 240 miles from each other. Madrid and Barcelona are both smaller and further apart, and see 20+ high-speed rail trains in both directions. The government should fund the Texas Bullet Train project and make it public.

Clarence Thomas hasn't disgraced the court. He's just the most openly corrupt member of an entirely corrupt institution.

This is one of the most alarming trends in US politics: the Right is just removing political opponents from office, and it's happening quite a lot with reform DAs or other people trying to scale back criminalization

Georgia's GOP is on brink of adopting a law to enable them to remove locally elected DAs who are not charging certain cases, like abortion or marijuana. I talked to one of their main targets, Athens DA Deborah Gonzalez: "I have a target on my back." New: boltsmag.org/georgia-bill-w

Leonard Leo, the Federalist Society head who has done more than anyone to push SCOTUS far to the right, secretly directed payments of $25,000 to Clarence Thomas' wife. IT'S TIME FOR THOMAS TO RESIGN. We should demand nothing less. He's HUGELY CORRUPT.

☑️ Massive corporate tax giveaways with next to no job/community benefits requirements and zero enforcement ☑️ Pulls badly-needed money out of our underfunded schools ☑️ Blocks benefits from going to clean energy #HB5, the Nuke Texas's Future bill

Todd Hunter laying out #HB5, the post-Chapter 313 bill, on the House floor now. He begins by emphasizing two things: “313 is gone” and “no renewables” (are in the bill) #txlege
Great read. These types of crime fighting projects - often ridiculed by partisan ideologues - actually work to reduce crime. AND they make our community look and feel better.

I'm glad @Rya_n_ickerson is highlighting the work @LesleyBrionesTX and @TiffanyForAlief are doing to increase safety in Alief. These types of efforts go far beyond (often myopic) "crime reduction" toward more holistic public safety. houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-t
