My languages have been useful. A few years ago, I had a modeling job in Breda. I flew to Düsseldorf, took a train to the German/Dutch border, then changed trains. In the rural areas, I found people didn’t speak English, but I could read signs and buy food. All good🤓🤗

Afrikaans is definitely similar to Dutch. When in the Netherlands and parts of Belgium, I understand the news on TV and read the papers. When I studied German, Afrikaans helped as the sentence structure was similar, with the verb at the end. My French didn’t help at all🤨

Ja. Ek praat Afrikaans. Iemand het gevra watter jaar is die artikel. Dit was 1985. ’n Boer maak ’n plan is die inpirasie vir die titel van my boek. Alles van die beste.

As mentioned, the 1918 Spanish flu had a high mortality rate. In Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, my mother’s eight-year-old sister caught the Spanish flu from her uncle who had just returned from the war. They both died.
