For those wondering about the safety of this biocontrol method for native insects, here's what Dr. Hajek had to say (paraphrase): 1) The fungus is native to North America, so it's already in the environment here and native insects likely have some degree of resistance.

2) The specific species/strain of Metarhizium fungus used here has been registered with the EPA and so extensive safety testing has been done. It can infect other insects but is unlikely to cause significant mortality to native populations.

Another cool vid!! Can the fungus act as too good of a pest control and take away food for birds and reptiles?

Thanks. As for your question, I'm not the expert here, but I would guess no. These beetles are invasive (at least in the US) and so it's not as if there are any bird species that depend on them. And I doubt reptiles feed on them since they spend their whole lives up in trees.
