Tomorrow @OnRallyRd comes a 2003-04 SP Authentic LeBron James Autographed Rookie Card. Stepping away from the card’s lone status at BGS 10 (the only example to achieve the grade out of a print-run of 500), let’s look at the history of @UpperDeckSports' SP Authentic series.

The gamble paid off, and the Griffey card has become a staple of the hobby. As of June 2020, nearly 120,000 examples of the Griffey Rookie had been graded. In 2009, Sports Illustrated called it “The Last Iconic Baseball Card.”

Ever since collectors have given UD carte blanche to experiment to their heart’s desire. Then in 1993, UD introduced their SP series. Building on their premium roots, 1993 SP Baseball brought the heat.

Eventually renaming to SP Authentic, UD expanded the series to all four major sports, and added more twists like limited print-runs, jersey inserts, and autographs.
