I write a lot of technical and narrative documents at work, most 2 to 6 pages. I wanted to share an editing technique that a past mentor taught me that I think is useful and under-valued for these kinds of documents: counting. \

What this news tells me is that Google has found a way to target ads just as effectively without using this data.

The fact that we are about to be hit with a tidal wave of voter suppression legislation by Republican legislatures throughout the country is the most under reported story right now. The media is unequipped to cover this in clear moral terms and instead prefers to both sides it.

I’m not a manager per se, but as an experienced engineer I wear multiple hats and interact with a lot of people in far-flung teams and roles. There’s plenty of space for subtle power dynamics to quietly take root, and I need to keep that in mind. Excellent piece by

Sometimes it’s overwhelming to change some complex feature in the existing code. I have a strategy for this that I really like: rip out the feature completely, and then re-add it. It might be more churn overall but you avoid a weird mixed old/new state that’s hard to think about.

I've been thinking about making a difference with donations for a long time, but my action on it can be credited to effective altruism and . Thanks for the guidance and persistence!

I've never posted publicly about donations before, but if this makes it easier for someone else to donate, that's a huge win.

My strategy is to spread donations across both short and long term goals. For me, it's important to reduce suffering now because the future isn't guaranteed. But it's also important to change policies, incentives, and cultural norms to solve root problems.

I'd been hesitating because this seemed like a big decision. But I thought, if I set it up monthly, I can change my mind. And I figured it was better to start giving soon, even if the targets and allocations are imperfect.

Last night, I finally set up a bunch of monthly donations so that I'll donate a little over 10% of my after-tax income. If you're fortunate enough to be in a comfortable position, I hope you consider giving, too!

Let's discuss the environmental cost of bitcoin. Because despite all the push for sustainable and green investment in the tech sector, there's a giant smoldering Chernobyl sitting at the heart of Silicon Valley which a lot of investors would prefer you remain quiet about. 🧵 (1/)

I've received several DMs from friends asking what do to about parents/family members who believe misinformation regarding the election, vaccines and COVID. Here's a research-based thread to help explain the roots of these beliefs and how to (and how *not* to) address them. 1/

We’ve often talked about how programming is like building houses. We’ve spent less time talking about how it is like practicing medicine. But doctors debug & modify complex systems on the fly as members of a collaborative team.
