My tweets do not represent the views of my employer, nor anyone else, and especially not myself. They represent the the primordial human dream, eternally screaming out into the void, desperately grasping for an answer from the Creator, who only replies:

We eat hot peppers to remind ourselves that our bodies are fragile and doomed to fail. A kind of pimento mori

Good news: Kansas’s ag-gag law has been ruled unconstitutional. Via "That makes Kansas the fourth state — after Utah, Idaho, and Iowa — to see their ag-gag law struck down."

Academics write/think about memetics less because memetics implies that success in academia is also subject to meme replication incentives, which may not always coincide with rationality and scientific rigor. Does anyone have thoughts on this?

Obvious explanation here is that memetics is not considered serious science in academia so fewer academics write about it. But I have a pet theory that there is another factor at work:

If you Google "memetics books" 3 of the top 8 books were written by 3 independent researchers working outside academia. At least 2 of those were funded via prior unrelated careers. Seems unusually high?

Best way to get startup ideas is to work at a startup. I was continually exclaiming to myself: "I can't believe there isn't a company that does this!"

Great post :) a friend sent it to me. Agree with most of what you're saying. While we can't get a God's eye view of our worlds, the ending leaves open the question of whether we can gain more objectivity, or as Morton says, we really "cannot get out."

Finally read the article. Having worked on a big EHR from '14-'15 little of this surprised me, but I didn't know of: - Extreme burnout levels in physicians ("seven per cent report suicidal thinking") - Using actual doctors in India as medical scribes, sounds farcical

To elaborate, while IMO definite optimism is in the books' ethos, Liu ultimately has a deeper commitment to working out the implications of Cosmic Sociology, even at the cost of showing the dark/hypocritical side of humanity, which doesn't always inspire confidence in the future.

+1 for reading Dan's letter. Main things I want to say: - Love the "retail sanity / wholesale madness" metaphor - Agree on Beijing, but pollution + politics 🤮 - Compared to Dan, my read of the Three-Body Trilogy is that Liu Cixin is more pessimistic about humanity

Something that is very underrated: Going to a foreign country and following along with a friend as they do certain chores around town. No one wants to subject their friends from abroad to this, but getting a little window into what life is like is really fascinating.

My own realization that we were over our heads in Afghanistan came when I interviewed farmers who pretended to set up Taliban camps that the US would then bomb. The farmers would collect the remnants of millions of dollars worth of bombs and sell them for $100 as scrap metal.

10: how did the 5 major get their names? This is slightly tangential to hematology, admittedly, but is a cool story that I’ve been aching to tell since I went through an intense etymology phase many years ago (still have lots of dusty books)./1

so according to state media contacts, Beijing genuinely thought they were going to win big in the elections today, to the point of having pre-written the stories

    (1) Bland food is underrated b/c ppl don't have the patience to appreciate its subtle textures (2) Eating plain food most of the time makes fine food tastier. It's basically dopamine fasting applied to food, except I figured it out years ago

Reminds me of how Opower got people to use less ⚡️🔌 by mailing graphs "you use X% more energy than your neighbors". I think a "you pay X% more property tax than your neighbors" direct mail campaign would be v effective.
