3d view was absolutely lit. playing a lot of minecraft recently and was getting mad tetris effect afterwards; i'd open a browser and would, like, 'see' the dom structure of the page, matrix-like, in blocks. if i moved my head i'd even get some parallax. tragically fleeting, tho

i think 3d layers it might be a more practical approach if it was done more selectively, like in my post. breaking out everything at once is a lot of extra information... the biggest gain is probably what's most local to your focus. so just float like 1-3 layers of the hierarchy

i wonder if you could have a smooth continuous interaction where you drag somehow to swap the local subtree into 3d mode & amount you drag decides exactly how many layers to float, so you can smoothly 'zip' and 'unzip' the layers

also wonder if you could figure out visual saliency of diff layers and use that to guide the visualization (if there are a divs nested inside each other but they all cover the same area, just collapse them for the purposes of the visualization), although that may be too 'magic'

feels like VR encourages people to play much more with these interesting continuous interactions. grain of the technology just seems to encourage this instead of buttons & clicking, even though you could totally do this type of stuff with display/mouse/touch.

yeah this is the thing i find most exciting about VR – the headsets/"immersion" are relatively uninteresting to me, but the hand controllers can be used for expressive continuous input in a way that the keyboard, mouse, even touchscreens don't really allow

and the ability to like, grab a talking point and wear it as a hat, or wave it around in real time, felt very like the future of rhetoric. there's just so many more dimensions of expression allowed at once than in conventional chat interfaces, mostly bc of the hand tracking
