I have identical notebooks that I can tell apart by tiny physical cues: worn paper, little creases I sometimes wish digital objects had these cues.. duplicates are rendered too perfectly, no way to tell em apart https://twitter.com/gr__or/status/1244082881170997251 …pic.twitter.com/OygcqyCnSb

I like that these physical cues emerge naturally -- they don't require you to make categories upfront and stick to them, whereas tagging or naming or putting stuff in folders does put that burden on you

you start with duplicates and work with them naturally, then over time tell them apart by those weird 'accidental' cues. sort of likehttps://twitter.com/rsnous/status/1198339769652015104 …

I'm amazed at how I get used to using some accidental side channel to check the system state for instance, I usually check if I'm running old Screenotate (vs. my personal dev Screenotate) by seeing if the icon turns white when I click 😬 (my dev version uses a newer macOS API) pic.twitter.com/ynHpCvO3AG

Yes! fan noise telling me my computer's working hard, etc I think intentional design can go too far in digital world -- when everything needs to be explicitly "designed for a use case", not enough entropy left for these side channelshttps://twitter.com/geoffreylitt/status/1216406598094069760 …

      Geoffrey Litt added,

In the physical world, the default state is entropy. Imposing uniformity is really hard. In the current software world, it's the exact opposite. Uniform monoculture is the default. Getting any variation is an uphill battle.

This paper is really neat, but also kinda ironically emphasizes the point -- they had to thoughtfully design "wear" into the system with specific purposes in mind. Wonder if there are ways to get this more naturally by default in digital mediahttps://twitter.com/crystaljjlee/status/1245063921343565827 …

I kinda appreciate "report (final v3) (ACTUALLY FINAL).docx" through this lens Repurposing the filename for versioning is janky and unstructured, but for simple cases it's easier than learning some complicated versioning system with more rigid rules

another example: on collaborative cloud apps, I yearn for a simple open-ended "notes" box on everything latest example: in a spreadsheet tab I would put a cell at the top saying "here's how to use this view!" but Airtable Views don't have that flexibility

I remember seeing something like this for Mac recently --it'd let you append notes to any existing app. Not sure where to find it.
