thinking about how art criticism (for books, music, movies, food, etc.) still plays a huge role in tastemaking, and the distinct role it plays compared to consumer reviews (e.g., Yelp reviews) what's the equivalent for art criticism, but for software?

without it, seems like we're just relying on download counts, click analytics, and consumer-contributed reviews (e.g., iTunes) to drive whether or not things we make are "good," rather than bigger-picture analyses of what value software bring to us, if at all.

The practicalities of doing this probably make it unfeasible, just in terms of the pace at which software is updated. Like, a book or album is more concrete in its delivery and can this be evaluated in a more static way.

Could a year end list of software products even exist? What would that look like?
