What I was thinking when I had this idea was a really spread out, full-page, horizontally-scrollable, zoomable thing with the images as backgrounds of the nodes. Also consider putting the edges in the background and fading the relevant ones in when you hover on a node.

Yeah I've been trying to make it horizontal, but the graph engines always just seem to lay out the nodes on top of eachother then The edges thing is a good idea! I might try it with absolutely positioned divs next

If you want to mess around with it yourself, the data is all just JSON files you can take from the network tab

Could try a circular or semi-circular layout. Example code herehttps://observablehq.com/@gordon/the-cybernetics-extended-universe …

I wonder if hierarchy is valuable though, since there's a clear delineation of scales?

Hive Plot is a similar approach that retains axes of categorization http://egweb.bcgsc.ca/

Don't worry, I scraped it! https://github.com/nd9600/personal_misc/blob/master/misc/red/apl/aplMapper.red … I _did_ the first 30 by hand in a few hours, got bored, then wrote that

Yeah! Was more talking about the labor of Alexander et al in making those connections but am so happy you scraped it too!

Oops... Yeah the book is extremely dense, in every single pattern you're flicking back and forth between patterns, you need lots of bookmarks
