a reminder: if inexperienced creators are using your tool to churn out loads of half-baked garbage, your tool is a phenomenal success

Heya, I have a rough draft of a new zine up on Github! Its the longest of my zines so far (2500 words) about what to do if you find yourself running an opensource tool for artists

Oops, I made an open-source art tool!
A guide for tool-makers, by @galaxykate (Kate Compton)

So you made a tool for people to make art! Perhaps people have started making art with your tool. What do you do next?

This zine is intended to help people making open-source tools for art (OSTAs) figure out how to manage their projects and communities, in a way that works for them.

The answer to "How do you have time to care?" is that every meme is somewhere someone's PhD thesis and this one's mine.

1000x magnification of Painted Lady butterfly scales. I like to describe a scale as the “unit of color” on a wing, each outgrowth of a cell kind of like the individual pixels on our phone screen that together make up a larger pattern

in conclusion, we need a social media platform that lets you sit next to someone on a bench in the park & feed some goddamn birds

MMOs “work” because shared activity directed toward a common goal creates a sense of mutual presence without you having to *say* stuff all the time. gardening, decorating etc (when implemented correctly) are activities of this type at which you also can’t meaningfully fail

so there’s a constant pressure to be *saying things* – ideally things that provoke some sort of reaction – just to be reassured (by likes, RTs, replies, etc) that yes, you still exist as a social entity, & yes, other people also still exist

current social media platforms have the mechanics all wrong. y’know how people are always posting hot takes on here? it’s bc we have a psychological need for *mutual presence* with other people & if you’re not posting stuff there’s no way for others to acknowledge your existence

don’t know why it took me so long to realize this, or why it’s suddenly so clear now. maybe my gardening games stuff was always headed in this direction from the very beginning, & I just hadn’t made all the connections yet

we’re all tired of living in the virtual equivalent of shopping malls – common spaces we’re not allowed to shape to our own needs we need shared virtual spaces that we can take care of as a way of taking care of each other

calling it now: the next successful social media site will be a MUD with gardening instead of combat mechanics people want to be in a place that they personally (alongside their friends) can exert effort to make better, even if only in small ways

My lab is conducting research on puzzle games. Play our game and answer some questions as you go: The whole process will take about 1 hour, and if you complete the whole thing, you will be entered into a drawing for a $50 Amazon gift card.

Playing with text-to-image generation is really interesting. I made a small app to generate images in real time while you type. It's like having a visual translator. Next step, port it to I'll add more videos in this thread. Some results are very surprising.
