absolutely no one cares about faction rivalry in 2020, splitting up half the playerbase affects everyone. Doesn't the lore already have the horde and alliance teaming up at the end of expansions anyway to fight some common goal? Why can't we queue raids and PVP with them.
imagine any other game releasing in 2020 and its like "and heres our crazy new feature, you can only ever play with half the playerbase WOOOOO" sounds not great right
Faction games work and can be a lot of fun if theyre balanced around faction based war/pvp mechanics (like Aion or whatever). I don't think it fits current WoW however, modern wow has shifted to group focused content where faction lines are irrelevant.
Less than half on the alliance side of the things. Faction is all but dead end game on many servers
... and yet half the people playing WoW are still on Alliance. Know why? A majority of people who play this game aren't in endgame echo chambers. They are casuals who enjoy the game for completely different reasons.
I mean if Blizzard had spent the last 16 years making the faction rivalry an actual interesting part of the game, I'd still 100% be behind it. But they 100% haven't done that.
That being said, I don't think they should *remove* the factions. They should just redefine what they mean and that shouldn't include the separation in PvE content.
I tried to get a coworker into wow with the shadowlands launch. Was walking him through the classes and races and he stops me immediately and asks “Why do they split the player base like that?”
Don't worry. Blizzard will again split the players up by faction AGAIN. Then team them up. AGAIN.
I like how ESO does it where factions only matter in world PVP
Moreover faction means less than nothing in the Shadowlands. We’re all in the afterlife together.
