I've seen the major complaint of the game being the gcd and feeling slow, does it ever start feeling better?

You have gcd abilities and a ton of non-gcd abilities. At 60 u realy start to notice the difference. A dragoon press a gcd then a non gcd basicly through its entire rotation. Leaving you pressing 2 buttons in 2.46 (ish with "haste") that is not so bad!
