I think they tried way too hard to appeal to the hardcore crowd to succeed as an MMO in the long term.

Wildstar should have been the final nail in the never ending debate about how "hard core gaming" still has a place in the current gaming space. There are still hangers on that insist it does yet the market has repeatedly shown it does not.

A far bigger problem was the prog path being 20>40, which BC had already shown was a pain for guilds. It didn't help that crafted gear focusing entirely on primary stat was far superior to any dungeon/raiding item for months, or that they launched with only 4 5 mans.
