I'd smash it for having next to no argument, piss-poor mapping of the non-existent argument in the intro, weak critical engagement with sources, and terrible paragraph structures. Whoever wrote the AI doesn't know how to write an essay.

All good points, but how would a marker identify this as an AI generated paper as opposed to one written by a weak student?

First, take a look at the references. There is a real published paper with the title "The critical role of retrieval practice in long-term retention", but in a different year. The Cepeda et al. is fake (though the authors have written other papers with similar titles).

Why does the AI use/generate fake references? And can it be instructed to only use real ones?
Great question. I'm going to ask the developers on the OpenAI community forum.
