When you add lanes to a highway to get faster traffic, you get more traffic instead. When you add people to a software project to get more done, you get more activity instead.

The corporate IT world is barely working. So many capable people are choked by procedures and culture. Our technical leaders must work with organisations to create an environment which can deliver software effectively, repeatably, and with quality.

A hypothetical So you walk to work each day. One day you come upon someone having trouble changing a tire. You think "I know how to change a tire, and it will only make me a little late for work" so you stop to help. The person is grateful.

Humans are (on average) so bad at communication that it’s somehow usually easier to spend two weeks to a month building something to show and discuss than it is to spec out what it should be and how it should work. I’m not quite sure why this is. Not saying I’m any better.

Does anyone else feel that they basically lucked into a high paying career because their interests randomly aligned with scarcity and a rapidly growing field, and that it's nowhere near as hard, or as societally valuable as what teachers, medical professionals and care-givers do?

0/ Remote work isn't exceptional as companies that are spread around multiple offices have done it for the last many years. The special sauce is communicating asynchronously as the default 💡 Here's a thread about why.

If somebody asked me one of those puzzle or CS study questions in an interview, my answer would come in two parts. 1) “I have a low tolerance for bullshit. You should know that before hiring me.” 2) “What are you really trying to figure out about me?” This is not career advice.

Productivity is inversely proportional to the complexity of a system. Keep it simple, and spend effort to keep it simple, if you want to go fast.

Surveying the landscape, majority of developers are completely ignorant of performance, never even enters their thought process. Another sizable group only knows "[premature] optimization is evil". Few actually understand that *efficiency* is key (not performance).
