On a more personal note: I've been managing this crazy project for almost a year now, and reaching this milestone is a very happy moment! I want to thank all the kind strangers who contribute with data and code. And of course the tremendous work of & 💪

Most of my life is devoted to data, research & progress on climate change. But it's a field I nearly walked away from when I was younger. I was hopeless that anything could change. That's why I'm convinced we need a new narrative. My article in :

CO2 emissions are flatting. This is good news, but it does not mean global warming will stop. Rather, it means that warming continues at the same rate rather than accelerating. To stop the world from warming we need zero emissions. This is the brutal math of climate change.

If the new release of the global CO2 data had shown that emissions had increased more strongly than previously believed I imagine it'd be all over the news. The fact that global CO2 emissions have stopped increasing is reported nowhere.

The new global data on CO2 emissions is out. This data shows that over the last decade global emissions have not increased. explains this downward revision in this very good thread. This is very good news of course! Now let’s get emissions down.

It is not people-centred if you make your work inaccessible to people. You do good work, you get public funding, your work is important to making the energy transition you speak of. Make your work available to people — and not just the paying elites behind closed doors.

A big new update on our COVID Data Explorer. It's now possible to see different metrics at the same time. Huge thanks to the enire team – especially also who has been driving the design of the Explorer since the start. Here it is:

The energy and climate data that dominates the public discourse comes from BP, the oil and gas multinational. BP does not have data on most low-income countries. The largely publicly funded does – but their data is not publicly usable, it is locked away behind paywalls.

My new article is out, it is about fossil fuel subsidies. They are often very large and get us stuck in the status quo of burning fossil fuels. Many governments fail to make use of one of the most cost-effective policy options to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
