There’s a 2000-euro prize for anyone who can translate/decode the inscription, or at least provide a convincing explanation of it. Dozens of proposals made up of some 1500 pages of arguments have come from five continents. A jury plans to announce a result in early 2020

Only part of the engraving resembles Breton. Some ppl detect elements of , , , Spanish, Russian/Cyrillic… is it a multilingual code, drawn up by a secret society, in an area where sailors and soldiers from around the world have circulated for centuries?

One full Breton phrase has been identified. It’s difficult to see in the photo, but the top of the inscription reads “DRE AR GRIO SE EVELOH / AR VIRIONES”… one specialist translates this as “Through these words you will see the truth.”

“ARPRIGLIO”. Some specialists see evidence of the Breton language here, the letters “arpri” forming the Breton word for “clay.”

The inscription also bears the date 1920, clearly sculpted by a different hand than the rest. A local anecdote goes that it was made by a Russian soldier garrisoned in the area in the years after the First World War

A sacred heart sits in the middle of the 1787 inscription. Some see it as a reference to the , a royalist and Catholic rebellion against the French Revolution that began in the region and spread across Brittany in the late 1700s

The inscription bears the dates 1786 and 1787, a period the nearby Fort du Corbeau was being renovated. One theory goes that the engraving was made by sculptors working on the fort -- which is now being restored again, but this time as a historic site open to the public
