Seeing ANNIHILATION tonight in a theater with a very large screen and killer sound. Glad to live someplace where this is still possible.

Saw ANNIHILATION with 14-yr-old son and 20-yr-old daughter. This kind of movie is not my son’s jam, but it held his attention and he seemed to enjoy feeling baffled by it. Daughter loved it, but this is definitely her kind of film. And not just because Oscar Isaac is in it.

When the lights came up my son said “Time to go on the Internet and read the theories.” I’m sure there will be plenty, and it’s the sort of movie that invites them. But I got to be honest: I’m just really not interested in that. I like the feel of it.

I like a movie that carries you along through picture, sound, music and performance, in a rush, or in a leisurely and hypnotic manner, taking you from thought to thought, idea to idea, and letting you put it all together, as ANNIHILATION does.

I might see it a 2nd time tomorrow, just to have the visceral experience again. I’m not sure how deep or complex or complete it is, and I just really don’t care. I think it’s a perfect vision, designed to provoke thoughts & feelings in the viewer. A spiritual prompt.

To close on a lighter note: when we saw Natalie Portman’s locket with Oscar Isaac’s picture in it, my daughter leaned over to me and whispered “I have one of those, too, and I wasn’t even married to him.”

Yup. Instant sci-fi canon.

I'm seeing it imminently - I adore the book & I understand the film deviates quite a bit, though tbh the book is borderline unfilmable as-is. It'd be nice to have the two as interesting companion pieces.

Its the only movie where I’ve walked up to strangers in the lobby afterwards to discuss it with them. They were so down to do it too, you can’t get that kind of experience with Netflix.

Under the skin was one of a kind and ex machina was pretty damn cool as well. I’m hyped!

It was like if you take Enter the Void, 2001:ASO, and Jurassic Park, put them in a blender, and then let it talk about my past relationships
-
It was like if Terrence Malick directed a Rick and Morty episode
