When I was reviewing, I hated having to give my thoughts to screening reps right after. My reviews very often ended up being much different than what I told them.
-
I quit doing that fairly early in my career – I would just tell them something like “I’m still thinking about it, I’ll figure it out in the review.”

The embargo / release date publication cycle makes pitching and writing much harder in that regard; I need time to digest the movies I watch. I don’t usually get it.

Even better when there’s a lot of Discourse around something you’ve seen and then you rewatch and can reassess

Being asked “what did you think?” the second the credits come up puts me in crisis mode sometimes

I agree with the old observation "I write to find out what I have to say." My opinions often evolve as I write. But fastest turnaround I ever had was thinking as "The Truman Show" ended that it was brilliant & then 5 min after leaving theater deciding I didn't even like it!

I walked out of a mostly-empty screening of UNDER THE SKIN absolutely unsure as to whether or not I “liked” it, but I damn sure couldn’t stop thinking about it for two solid weeks afterwards.

But what about the importance of being FIRST?!?! The modern era’s measure of a film’s worth?!?!
