I recently found a copy of the screenplay for Sex, Lies & Videotape featuring Soderbergh’s diaries before, during, and after production, and even in his career infancy, he has always been an amazing personality and cognizant of how his actions affect his coworkers.

I’ve always thought the mythology around directors who couldn’t get their films made silly. (Gilliam, Carruth) There is an idea of viewing them as rebels who never compromised. In reality, most turn out to be assholes who didn’t realize their potential because they are assholes.

Def agree. I think the best creative choices come from some kind of obstacle. When directors are given fully free reign for their vision the product tends to be a historic disaster. The best work is a collaboration between problem solvers.
