Watched WW 84. Not awful, but the wonderful stuff gets drowned in chaos, slovenliness & stereotypes. Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig & Pedro Pascal act their asses off despite not getting the support they need from the script. Liked the last 15 mins, but they didn’t lay the groundwork.

I never would’ve identified Pedro Pascal as a potential superstar, but I think he has to be considered one now. I can’t think of very many actors who could be Clint Eastwood on a TV show and a combination of Gene Hackman and Nicolas Cage in a movie at the same time.

Tangentially, I was talking to one of my boys about superhero films. He’s pretty hard-core. He said the only MCU movie he loves is the first Spider-Man, and his favorite superhero films are the Nolan Batmans “because they feel like real movies.” He couldn’t explain what he meant.

In case you care about his Nolan rankings, he likes Dark Knight, then TDKR, then BB. But he thinks that the only reason the other two are inferior is because they aren’t the Dark Knight.

I’ll give me my list of favorite superhero movies some other day bud the Raimi Spider-Man films and the Nolan Batman movies are right up near the top because they feel like products of a singular personality rather than a corporate strategy.

Anyway, I lost the thread on this thread, but whatever. I love the first WW even though the ending was the standard superhero punch-up non-ending. This one was narratively & politically a train wreck but it’s heart was mostly in the right place.

Apologies for the typos, some of which look like I’m trying to speak after having a Novacaine injection

The mechanics of it were unnecessarily obtuse and weird, but those emotional beats hit like a piledriver.

The final moment between them was pretty good and Chris Pine plays it well but having him come back in the exact manner he did was uh... a decision

It really took me out of the movie because it just doesn’t seem like the sort of thing that wonder woman would be party to.
