So Rich Lowry of National Review defends Matt Yglesias and in the process misgenders (purposefully, to be an asshole)@emilyvdw, one of my most treasured friends in this profession. Just one more bit of proof of how ostentatiously shitty modern conservatism has become.

Just one tiny slice of the rancid pie that is this “editorial“ — typical right- wing gaslighting that insists that if a member of a marginalized group feels threatened/harmed, then it is up to a representative of the dominant culture to determine whether the claim is true.pic.twitter.com/GBzQiwu4Vr

This piece is credited to simply “The Editors” — not merely to place a rhetorical impact bumper between the publication and anyone who would criticize it. This collective byline makes it all worse, because it means it represents the official point of view of the outlet itself.

Such a small, petty, vindictive thing to publish. I would hope that @mattyglesias Will take a moment and think about that Harper’s letter in terms of who it actually served. You can tell a lot by the wisdom of your choices by who rushes to defend you.

The secondary function of a piece like this is to signal anyone in agreement to rush to dogpile a writer whose original statement was, if anything—and consistent for Emily—considerate and kind.

If your first instinct when serving any sort of conflict is to instinctively side with whoever has more power, your sense of life is profoundly fucked up. And yet that’s what the large sector of the electorate and the subsidized right wing media that panders to them always does.

Emily is a wonderful person and a great critic who has made an amazing journey. Her original statement was not any kind of “attack” but simply an honest assessment of her predicament, and the idea that it would have “victims” who would require a “defense” is inherently ludicrous.

Hopefully people who were skeptical are beginning to see what some of us were saying from the start: that letter was not a defense of free speech, but a half-assed excuse note for those whose existence is predicated on the idea that free-speech only works in one direction.

Wow, it’s really interesting to find out that the marginalization of entire groups of people in the workplace isn’t “a real problem.”

That is such a perverse, sadly vindictive paragraph.

How many fucking times and in how many ways can they say the same thing, which in itself says nothing and is the laziest type of catch-all to "win" arguments.
