This is unprecedented, and it’s gonna take a while to come to grips with all that it means. This is not just a punishment for one statement. (Roseanne was an open bigot when ABC rebooted her show.) It feels like a cultural recoil. For Hollywood, at least.

This was a business decision. That sounds cold and cynical, but actually it isn’t. A threshold was crossed. The network saw the writing on the wall. Bottom line: bigotry is becoming uncommercial. You can’t distribute it as premium product.

I hope what happened to Roseanne is a harbinger of culture-wide recoil against what is happening to this country. A collective cry of “Enough.” Time for bigots to crawl back under their rocks and speak their hate in whispers.
