    Y'all, I want to do a book about the making of Deadwood that looks like a Bible from about 1900, with original illustrations in the style of a Dickens novel. My question is, if I did that as an independent limited-run project, would you buy a copy? Cost would be $30.

    My junior year of high school, based on this photo in the San Diego Reader, I went to see a double feature of Stranger Than Paradise & Down By Law. Nobody I knew would go with me so I went alone. I ate too many Red Vines and threw them up in the bathroom at some point but...

    I don’t even know where to begin answering this. The question made me realize that I’ve been doing my part to subsidize theatrical exhibition over the last half century.

    Name a film you’ve watched THREE TIMES in the cinema when it came out. Three times on its first screening run. Not directors cut LOTR after etc. Mine is Jurassic Park. Wife’s is Greatest Showman. Third time I watched J’Park was in Davenport Theatre: Got a migraine screen so bad.

    This whole story speaks to multiple trends in media and media coverage that have been eating at me. The first is the lack of accountability in the streaming age. We're increasingly losing independent reporting of data. Netflix (or whomever) can feed us whatever numbers they want.

    I also recommend taking the time to read the text of this lengthy 2014 Andy Zax address, about how we've become lulled into believing that our cultural legacy is being well attended to, when in fact much of it is buried in bureaucracy and/or decaying.

    A couple of pertinent pieces to read, in relation to the UMG fire. First, this WaPo Erik Wemple editorial addresses the original media coverage, which was apparently wildly inaccurate because the press just trusted the corporate spokesperson not to lie.

    Given how few people actually watch most shows, I could answer with almost anything. More people should be watching Fleabag! Better Things! Russian Doll! And who knows how much anyone's watching any streaming show? But a show that's not talked about as much as it should be? Ramy.
