His attorneys say that reinforces the inherent problem with asset forfeiture: Stephen Lara had $87K taken from him for more than six months by the government with no cause. And he only got it back after he got a lawyer & talked with the Washington Post.

I reached out to the Justice Dept, DEA & Nevada Highway Patrol on this yesterday, and everyone declined to comment. Today, moments after it published, DEA said it is returning Lara's money, & the Justice Department said it is "reviewing existing policy on adoptive forfeitures"

Stephen Lara's story had some particularly interesting aspects. A Nevada Highway Patrol sergeant can be heard on the traffic stop saying an adoption is "too easy." A trooper remarks "As odd as it is, everything lines up." They took his money anyway.

As and I reported months ago, the man charged yesterday and those he worked with weren’t connected to the Gaetz sex trafficking investigation — except that they found out about it and tried to use it to get cash from Gaetz’s father, Don.

Remember when the investigation into Matt Gaetz was revealed, & Gaetz responded that someone was trying to extort his family over it? Justice yesterday revealed charges against a Fla. man who they say tried to get $25 million from Gaetz’s dad in that plot
