This is why I asked my original question about estimated magnitudes to Winship — “this will lead to an unacceptably large reduction in labor supply” is a coherent view but it requires empirical support. The real position appears to actually be that poverty per se isn’t bad.

That isn't as funny as you think. Lack of money is not the cause of poverty; it IS poverty, and nothing causes itself.

And they absolutely right, and you know it, that you could divide up all the money in the world equally and poverty would return within a month or so.

I come from an affluent background and money absolutely did a lot to address my drug problem when I was younger. I went to an expensive rehab while most of the people I hung out with were SOL if they wanted treatment because they were poor.

We defeat poverty by spending lots of money managing people's lives but under no circumstances do we put the money in the hands of the impoverished.

five million dollars to an agency which promises to provide "how to write a resume" powerpoint presentations is just being fiscally responsible

I think what they meant is that throwing a *one time* sum of money at someone poor rarely improves their lives. Yes, if it's an ongoing entitlement it might help, but then it creates dependence on that entitlement.

You get a poor person a car or even just a suit and it vastly improves their job prospects

This is right, and we all instinctively know it. Even if you airdropped cash into the poor neighbourhoods, they would still look similar a year later. It's why lottery winners end up blowing it all.
