I see this awful piece of advice now and again... What leads people to make these baseless claims??? I have literally never heard of a single second language learner of Japanese (who started after age 15) that successfully picked up pitch accent without specifically studying itpic.twitter.com/0Jx2SPyFPZ

There are places in Kyushu where pitch accent does not exist. I have good and bad days, but I've had 20-minute phone conversations with Japanese from helpdesks, who were surprised when they had to write down my name in the end. It's dangerous to use words like always and never.

Yes, there are places in Ibaraki with no pitch accent as well. But it sounds like you are implying that the REASON Japanese people mistake you as native is due to the variety of pitch accent across Japan, AKA in SPITE of the fact that your pitch accent isn't standard.

2/2 I'm lucky to have been together for 25 years with a Japanese woman who constantly nitpicks about everything. That helps a lot.

So are you actually claiming to be able to speak Japanese while correctly embodying a solidified system of pitch accent? Not just the dialect near you where pitch accent doesnt exist?

1/2 Claiming things is always very dangerous. I let my resume speak for itself. My Japanese is standard, but definitely has southern influences. I don't think about pitch; I just speak. Japanese don't think about pitch either. They just speak. No difference.

OK, so you are not claiming to be able to speak Japanese with standard pitch accent. Then you really have no business in the original conversation. Yea, Japanese people don't think about pitch while speaking, but they get it right every time, and notice when others don't

*Standard* pitch accent as in the accent used by NHK? Because even the Japanese have to train to get that right. Any other pitch accent... what they will notice if it's different from their own accent is that you're 1) not from Japan 2) from another part of Japan.

3/3 Theory gives you a push in the right direction, but in the end you need to internalize and automate, so that you can stop thinking and start feeling.

2/3 Would a book have made the process faster? We'll never know. But if it works the same way as grammar: if an explanation about a grammatical phenomenon (wa/ga, anyone?) becomes longer than 3 pages, people should stop reading and just get on with it.
