I see this awful piece of advice now and again... What leads people to make these baseless claims??? I have literally never heard of a single second language learner of Japanese (who started after age 15) that successfully picked up pitch accent without specifically studying itpic.twitter.com/0Jx2SPyFPZ

There are places in Kyushu where pitch accent does not exist. I have good and bad days, but I've had 20-minute phone conversations with Japanese from helpdesks, who were surprised when they had to write down my name in the end. It's dangerous to use words like always and never.

Yes, there are places in Ibaraki with no pitch accent as well. But it sounds like you are implying that the REASON Japanese people mistake you as native is due to the variety of pitch accent across Japan, AKA in SPITE of the fact that your pitch accent isn't standard.

2/2 I'm lucky to have been together for 25 years with a Japanese woman who constantly nitpicks about everything. That helps a lot.

what I was saying is that without any theory, you aren't going to know what to look for when listening to real Japanese, and so you aren't really going to have a chance at picking it all up. I have NEVER heard of a case where 100% leaving it up to the unconscious actually worked

Other accents may need more work, but it helps if you ask people to constantly correct you (which is basically what happened in our marriage). Do that for 25 years...

Hard to say. Some people are very good at listening and imitating other people. One of the easier intonations to pick up unconsciously is for example the でしょう used in weather forecasts (going downwards in an extreme way).
