Would be learning 古文 learning another language at the same time?

Well in order to make real progress you are going to need to dedicate a lot of time to it, which will take time away from studying modern Japanese. All the resources will be written in modern Japanese so it's pretty justified though.

I would think of it as learning 文語, not 古文, since they are really two different things

I see, the subject is 古文 because it's kind of the old texts, and 文語 the language right? When I search it in wikipedia it's confusing because there are a lot of names haha, but yeah I think we are talking about the same thing.

古文 is way harder than simple 文語 because the vocab and culture are totally different than modern Japanese
